Everything you do is wrong (and that’s okay).
So, want to make your own visual novel? Something that everyone will love? Too bad! Everything you do is wrong.
You will pick the wrong storytelling format.
The art will ruin everything.
I hope you weren’t planning on including voices.
No, I mean, I REALLY hope you weren’t planning on including voices.
I’ve got more covering music, writing, even how many endings there are, but I’m too lazy to hunt them down. Point is, if your dream is to make a VN everyone will love, it’s time to scrap that dream. Now. Don’t focus on what “everyone” will love. Focus on what YOU will love. Make the story you want to read and do it the way you want it to be told. I see people posting surveys all the time asking about the “dream VN” or “What do you want to see in an otome game?” While I appreciate getting the feedback, if you turn surveys like those into a checklist, you will wind up with a mess that you probably don’t even like working on.
Now, I hear a lot of things like “ignore the haters,” and whatnot, but I think that’s swinging too far in the other direction. It’s something of an oversimplification to call people who have different preferences “haters.” Feedback matters. Opinions matter. If you really didn’t care what other people think, you’d simply keep everything to yourself and not bother to release anything. What’s important is knowing that it’s impossible to please everyone, so you need to learn how to read feedback in the right light. Sometimes people will see things that you don’t: things that will make your story even more amazing. Take the feedback that improves the story YOU want to tell, and accept that you will have people disappointed in some of your choices. That’s okay. Really.
In summary:
1.) Accept the feedback that makes your story stronger.
2.) Be okay with the fact that the choices you make won’t please everyone.
3.) Once you figure out the second one, let me know how to do that.
Fanart Contest Yay!
Do you guys still give discounts to people who draw fanart? I want to buy Yousei but my PayPal’s low on cash :(
Technically the codes only go to people who enter fanart contests, but hey, we haven’t had one in a while, so why not? Hey guys! Let’s have a fanart contest because I feel like it!
-Winner gets a free game of their choice. Everyone else gets a 15% off code. (Edit: That means any sakevisual game current or future - so yes you can save it for Backstage Pass or the next Jisei game if you want.)
-Entries must be new pieces drawn specifically for this contest.
-Entry must be a drawing of one or more sakevisual characters. Any of our VNs are acceptable, including ones not yet released. The game must be an actual sakevisual release, not just something Ayu’s written for (so no Winter in Fairbrook or Cinders).
-By submitting a piece, you give sakevisual the right to use it however they see fit providing that a.) You are credited for it, and b.) We don’t make any money off of it. Basically, I’m reserving the right to use it for a Fanart Friday, or post it on the blog, or otherwise show it off to people.
-Winner will be decided by popular vote.
-Email your submission to ayu@sakevisual.com on or before Wednesday, March 6th, 2013.
I forgot this existed.
Apparently I had this file since summer. Welp.
File under “Things I am okay with.”
Now presenting: Sakevalentines - The world’s laziest Valentine’s Day cards. Includes a decently cheesy RE:A++ set and a questionable Jisei set.

Hey gang! Yousei is out! Hurrah! Huzzah! Other cheerful exclamations! What took so long? Well, I guess it just took us a lot longer to tighten up the graphics than we thought. Also, Yousei’s longer than Jisei and Kansei. And there are more characters. And images. And music. And everything, really. I also hear it’s the best one yet. And there may be emotional bits, but don’t quote me on that.
For those of you who haven’t joined the Jisei clan yet, Jisei is currently 50% off for the entire month of February. Think of it as our Valentine’s Day gift to you! Plus, the Jisei+Kansei bundle discount is still in effect, so if you buy Jisei and Kansei together, that’s like…less than twenty bucks. Which is pretty cool.
Yousei cast video featuring your first listen for Jupiter, David, and Nathan.
Jupiter - Erica Mendez
David - Clifford Chapin
Nathan - Chris Cason
I was going through some old files and I found the original sketch of the twins I sent to Deji when we were working on Jisei. This is the only direction she got from me concerning them, and it was up to her to flesh them out into complete designs.
This is one of the many reasons why I love her.
